Monya Cohen, Psy.D.

Clinician

Monya Cohen, Psy.D is a licensed psychologist with over 20 years’ experience working with children, adolescents, and their families.   Currently, Dr. Cohen is working in private practice with children, families, and adults. She specializes in working with clients who experience emotional dysregulation and symptoms of depression, anxiety, social anxiety, as well as survivors of PTSD and complex trauma.  Dr. Cohen is invested in teaching her clients to manage their symptoms and emotions by integrating principles and strategies of CBT & DBT, as well as aspects of mind/body medicine, including yoga and Zen mindfulness.

 

Prior to opening a private therapy practice in March of 2021, Dr. Cohen was a psychologist for the State of Maryland for twenty-one years.   She coordinated the trauma informed care program at Springfield Hospital Center.   For sixteen years, she was a primary therapist at The John L. Gilder Regional Institute for Children and Adolescents (JLG-RICA) and provided individual, family, and group therapies for children and adolescents.  Dr. Cohen enjoyed leading DBT skills groups for teens and DBT family groups.  In addition, she was the Director of Psychology Internship Training at JLG-RICA and valued her role in overseeing and guiding future psychologists.   She also enjoyed coordinating continuing education seminars for social workers and psychologists.  Dr. Cohen continues to teach and mentor budding psychologists as an adjunct faculty at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology where she shares her knowledge and experience of psychological trauma.  She loves teaching and is a lifelong learner.

 

Dr. Cohen graduated from Argosy University in Washington, DC in 2001.  She earned a B.S. in psychology at Temple University and a master’s in social work from The University of Maryland at Baltimore.  Dr. Cohen is a certified yoga therapist and registered yoga teacher.   She is inspired by the works of Bessel van der Kolk, Judith Herman and Jon Kabat-Zinn. 

In her spare time, Dr. Cohen teaches yoga and yoga therapy.  She enjoys traveling with her husband, experiencing different cultures, as well as bicycling and swimming.
